Getting around in Chiang Mai
As with most cities, you have several options. There are taxis but they're not that common unless you call one. Then there are tuk tuks. Basically a three wheeled motorcycle with a seating platform built on the back. See pic. Duck way down to get in or out and you're good to go. Either of these would be about 100 to 200 baht for a trip almost anywhere - about $3 to $6 dollars. But most popular in Chiang Mai are the red trucks. Essentially a pick up truck with a cab in the back that has two benches facing each other and a step to get in. Again, pic above. They are everywhere. Just hail one, tell the driver where you want to go and hop in. The hard part is communicating with the driver but we managed to get it done. Multiple people get picked up along the way, all going different places but the driver seems to keep it all straight in his head. Hop out when your stop comes, pay the driver and you're off. The key is not to ask the driver how much when you get in or you'll be quoted a price equal to a taxi. Going rate for these is 20 baht or about 50 cents per person per trip. Of course whether tuk tuk or red truck, safety is minimal. No seat belts, open cab etc. but hey, part of the adventure.
