Amber Fort in Jaipur
Magnificent place with a view to die for. But if your maharaja man went off and got killed in battle, the women had to throw themselves on a funeral pyre to commit suicide. This was usually voluntary but not always, and there is a verb dedicated to this act (sati), as well as a Rajasthan state 1987 ordinance against this practice or glorification of it. The women of the maharajas household were all trained in martial arts and generally carried weapons. They were so weighted down by their ornate clothing and jewelry that ramps and wheelchairs were constructed so servants could take them throughout the palaces and forts.
